Architectural trips by bike

Rent-a-bike – that is the name of the bike rental-system at the Luxembourgian Moselle! It is a special opportunity to discover the contemporary architecture at the slanted Luxembourgian vineyards!

Starting point of this exciting tour should be Schengen. This charming vineyard-village became world-famous as it gave its name to the agreement signed in 1985 which guarantees liberty of travelling to 400 million European citizens. Schengen adapted itself to its name and its position as a “European destination of Excellence”: The architectural bureau Hermann & Valentiny – designer of the Luxembourgian pavilion at the World Exhibition in Shanghai – did not only build an esplanade in a very modern way. These architects have also designed the Relais Europe where the first European Museum is located. The museum underlines its special vocation with simple exposed concrete, wood, clear lines and volume. But still not enough, one can also find contemporary villas which grow out of the slopes within the sunny vineyards. Sustainable architecture, natural building materials and modern exposed concrete merge into a synthesis of the arts.

Modernity and progressiveness, quality and love of nature – this is what the wine cellars Sunnen and Ruppert in Schengen or Cep d’Or in Hëttermillen radiate! They all surprise with a successful venture of the combination of space and architecture. They communicate the quality of wine and a fine awareness of life. These wine cellars can be visited freely.

The cycling track passes by many contemporary as well as historical monuments, by Bech-Kleinmacher, Remerschen, Ehnen, Wellenstein, Dalheim, Machtum and by the medieval village Remich or through the Moselle metropolis Grevenmacher.

Cycling along historical railway architecture: on the PC2 from Luxembourg to Echternach you go along small village train stations built in the Suisse Chalet-style of a former narrow gauge railway. Bridges and tunnels as engineering-monuments make this cycling track an adventure! But also PC12 from Colmar-Berg to Pétange revives the old railway architecture. The station in Clémeny has become a favorite meeting point for bikers. PC20 from Wiltz to Bastogne (B) is also very interesting.

Discover the urban space – on safe tracks: historical or contemporary architecture, parks and cemeteries. Stop for a rest where you like it! Vel-oh and Vel-ok – rental systems for bikes in Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette – make this fascinating track possible. Thanks to the 24/24 hours self-service at each of the more than 20 rental-stations one can discover both architectural cities! The first 30 minutes of the rental period are free of charge. Upon request the Luxembourg City Tourist Office offers also guided cycling tracks. Just register on www.lcto.lu.
